Meet Penny & Daphne: The Quality Control Labradors of Ukulele Trading Co Australia
I've taken quality control very seriously for years but still believe in keeping things fun!
Behind the scenes, two very special team members ensure that everything runs smoothly (and that no box goes uninspected). Meet Penny and Daphne, our Quality Control Labradors!
The Furry Faces Behind the Business
Penny and Daphne are family members and important parts of the Team, essential to my daily operations.
These two playful Labradors ensure that the workspace is filled with positivity, enthusiasm, and, of course, plenty of tail wags.
Penny, the Black Lab, is the elder of the two. She is always in slow motion, gentle, and very talkative. She thinks she is the boss and lets everyone know it. She will not be ignored!
On the other hand, Daphne is an energetic go-getter, super happy to please, and super excited to meet people.
She hyperventilates, slobbers, and can't keep her front paws on the ground—the constant tippy taps of anticipation are the norm.
Daphne thinks people only come to see her, whether greeting customers, delivery drivers, or investigating a fresh ukulele shipment.
But watch out for her tail wags—more like a whip!
What Does Quality Control Look Like?
While they may not have official business degrees, Penny and Daphne take their roles very seriously.
🐾 Product Testing: Before unpacking, every package arriving must pass the “sniff test.” The delivery van drivers must also be welcomed and loved.
No suspicious scents go undetected. If a package has an interesting smell, expect a full-scale Labrador investigation.
🐾 Employee Morale:
Running a small business has its stressful moments, and it can be a bit lonely being an online-only business, but a quick cuddle or a game of fetch with my Labs is an instant mood booster.
They are the Queens of relaxing!
Penny and Daphne nap regularly, some might say constantly. They set a great example when the pressure is on—breathe and relax, and all will be well in the end.
But Labradors don't run on naps alone. They also run on Snacks.
I cannot miss morning tea, lunch, or afternoon tea breaks; it is simply not allowed.
🐾 Sound Quality Checks:
It’s no coincidence that our ukuleles sound so good. Penny and Daphne are always nearby during tuning and play-testing, giving their approval (or their best curious head tilt) to each instrument’s sound.
If a ukulele doesn’t pass their “laid-back listening test,” I know I need to adjust the tuning.
🐾 Customer Engagement:
I don't have a physical shopfront, but every week, people ask to come in and check out the latest.
Greeting visitors with wagging tails, these two are natural brand ambassadors.
I am starting to suspect that a great many of my customers only come to see Penny and Daphne.
Customers sometimes have the flimsiest excuses for visiting, and some travel a long way to personally collect something that I can easily post to them.
Penny loves a belly and bum rub, and Daphne is always up for a big ol’ slobbery doggie kiss—she has no shame, and everyone gets offered a kiss.
If you follow the shop on Instagram, you’ve probably seen Penny and Daphne making guest appearances.

I believe music should bring joy, and that joy starts with a positive and welcoming environment.
Penny and Daphne remind all of us daily that music, like life, should be fun and full of love.
Their wagging tails are the final stamp of approval on everything we do!
