Switching to Low G tuning on your ukulele extends its range by five notes, allowing you to play more complex melodies and bass lines.

It adds a richer, fuller sound, making solo and fingerstyle playing more dynamic. Low G tuning also improves chord voicings by providing a stronger bass foundation, making your ukulele blend better in ensembles and offering a broader repertoire.

This tuning is especially favored by fingerstyle players and those looking to explore new musical possibilities.

Switching to a Low G tuning on your ukulele offers several advantages that can enrich your playing experience, especially if you're looking to expand the range and versatility of your instrument:

1. Extended Range

Low G tuning extends the range of the ukulele by five additional notes. This opens up the ability to play more complex melodies and bass lines that are not possible in the standard high G tuning. This extended range makes the ukulele more versatile, allowing you to explore genres and pieces that benefit from those lower notes.

2. Richer Sound

Low G tuning provides a fuller, richer sound because it allows the ukulele to produce lower frequencies. This is particularly beneficial when playing solo pieces or fingerstyle arrangements, as the deeper tones can create a more balanced and harmonious sound.

3. Melodic Playing

With a Low G string, the ukulele can more easily handle melodic playing that requires a wider range. This is useful for playing lead melodies or complex chord-melody arrangements where the melody line might dip below middle C.

4. Improved Chord Voicings

Low G tuning can make certain chord voicings sound fuller and more balanced. Chords that include notes on the G string will have a lower pitch, which can provide a stronger bass foundation and improve the overall tonal balance of the chord.

5. Better Compatibility with Other Instruments

If you play in an ensemble or jam with other musicians, Low G tuning can make your ukulele blend better with other instruments like guitars and basses. The extended range allows your ukulele to occupy a different sonic space, complementing rather than competing with higher-pitched instruments.

6. Enhanced Fingerstyle Techniques

Low G tuning is particularly favored by fingerstyle players. The lower string allows for a wider range of arpeggios and bass notes, making fingerpicking patterns more dynamic and interesting.

7. Repertoire Expansion

Some songs and arrangements are written specifically with Low G tuning in mind. By fitting a Low G string, you can access a broader repertoire that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to play in high G tuning.

In summary, switching to Low G tuning enhances your ukulele's range, sound, and versatility, making it a great option if you're looking to expand your playing capabilities and explore new musical possibilities.

The New Nylgut® is the first product developed and patented by Aquila. Nylgut® is a plastic compound of three different components.

We'd say most ukulele enthusiasts seem to agree that fitting a set of Aquilas is the FIRST and BEST way to improve the tone of a cheap ukulele. The volume and tone improvement will knock you out and are well worth the price of fitting a set.

Compared to Nylon, the New Nylgut® produces a better sound and stays in tune better, because the moisture absorption is less of .1% against the 2.0% of Nylon normally employed for the musical strings (i.e. Du Pont Tynex® polyammide 6-12).

Due to the higher density, similar to that of pure gut (1.30 gr/cm3), the New Nylgut® produces a better sound than Nylon.

In other words, the New Nylgut® is probably the first genuine synthetic gut in the world.

The New Nylgut® assures:
- better sound similar to the genuine gut strings;
- a more accurate fret-intonation due to the well-gauged material;
- a very stable intonation under moisture changes.

The best sound quality develops when the strings have been completely stretched, which ordinarily takes some time. To achieve a more stable intonation in just a few minutes you can repeatedly pinch each string at mid-length with your fingers, pull it decidedly sideways and tune it up again. Stop when the string does not pull out of tune anymore.
