Hal Leonard Ukulele Method Book 1 by Lil' Rev
More than just chords. Learn to actually play the ukulele!
A brilliant place to start your ukulele journey, and a book you'll keep coming back to as your playing develops.
If you're learning ukulele, there's a good chance you'll start by learning a few chords and strumming along to your favourite songs. That's a great start, but there's so much more you can do with four strings!
That's what makes the Hal Leonard Ukulele Method Book 1, written by acclaimed ukulele teacher and performer Lil' Rev, such a terrific learning resource.
Unlike many beginner books that concentrate almost entirely on chords and strumming, this one takes a much broader approach. You'll learn how to play melodies, understand musical notation, explore scales and develop the skills to play actual tunes on your ukulele.
And it doesn't throw everything at you at once. It builds your knowledge step by step, making it a wonderfully comprehensive introduction to the instrument.
Why I recommend this book
I've used this book with many of my own students, and it's become my go-to teaching book when introducing children to the ukulele.
One of the things I particularly like is the attention given to melody playing.
Learning chords is important, but being able to pick out a melody opens up a whole new world of possibilities. You can play recognisable tunes, develop your musical understanding and eventually combine melody and chords to make your playing much more interesting.
It also introduces standard musical notation alongside ukulele tablature, so you're not just learning where to put your fingers. You're learning to understand a little more about how music works.
It's one of those books that really does cover all the bases.

My recommendation
There are plenty of books that will teach you a few chords and get you strumming. There's nothing wrong with that, but I reckon you deserve to discover everything your ukulele can do.
This is the book I'd recommend if you want to build a solid foundation, understand music a little better and develop beyond simply strumming chords.
It's a terrific learning resource, whether you're picking up the ukulele for the very first time or looking to take your playing in a new direction.
