Koa wood is the most traditional ukulele wood. The elegant curling of the Koa makes this ornate wood sought after by builders and players alike.
Only Trees grown in Hawaii can be called Koa Trees (In other countries the similar species of tree is Blackwood or Acacia). Analogous to the Champagne Vs Sparkling wine debates occurring in France between wine regions.
What is not up for debate is that Koa wood is the Gold Standard wood for Ukulele construction.
'Beauty is beyond compare' to paraphrase Dolly Parton. Koa wood is sought after not just for its good looks but for its qualities as a renowned tone-wood that produces ukuleles that are rich and full, it sings without being too strident. Sweet and Bell-like are often how their tone is described.
The Hawaiian Koa Gloss line from Kala Brand is built using a method of designed engineered wood. The Top, Back and Sides are a laminate of 3 pieces of Genuine Hawaiian Koa.
LAMINATE CONSTRUCTION ADVANTAGES
1. Thinner Top Back and Sides makes for increased volume and tone.
2. More Affordable.
3. Very Strong and will never split along the wood grain.
Do not ever think of laminate construction as a poor, cheap nasty or inferior construction method. Quite the contrary Laminate tone-wood construction offers 3 distinct advantages over solid wood construction.
Being Laminate Construction means the top can be super thin to vibrate loud and sweet. HPL "designed" woods can be made much thinner than a solid wood top can ever be made and the thinner the wood the better it can vibrate.
Another benefit to Laminate construction is in making the Tone-wood ukulele more affordable. Solid wood ukuleles use lots of timbre resources to manufacture, and that comes with a hefty price-tag disadvantage. For approximately 1/2 to 2/3rd the cost of a solid instrument, you can get yourself into real Hawaiian Koa Wood and not break the bank.
Constructed of three layers of genuine Hawaiian Koa wood. Designed Constructed woods are glued under massive pressure with the centre layer of Koa going across the grain of the other to pieces at a 90- degree angle.
The most figured piece of Koa wood goes on the top for max beauty. Strength is the hallmark of a designed constructed wood. The centre layer is at a 90-degree angle making for a constructed cross bracing. The result is that unlike a solid wood it will never split along the grain.
QUALITY CONSTRUCTION FEATURES
The Kala KA-KTG Tenor ukulele is fitted with quality touches like D’Addario Titanium® Strings, a Pau Ferro fingerboard and the most excellent GraphTech NuBone Nut and Saddle.
UC-T Tenor Ukulele Foam Hard Case.
Designed to protect your tenor ukulele from the rigours of on-the-road wear and tear.
The Skeleton of the Polyfoam case is made from 'Esky' type foam, so it is very rigid for protection, but is still very light in weight and will absorb bumps and shocks.
Much lighter to carry than the traditional old tech masonite board covered with vinyl cases, it is amazing how a case so strong can be so lightweight.
The UC Series of ukulele cases features a plush interior with an accessory compartment and a weather-resistant nylon exterior with a large accessory pocket.
