A Guide to ukulele size. Soprano vs Concert vs Tenor Ukulele: Which One Should You Choose?

One of the most common questions I get is: “CC, what ukulele size should I buy?”

So I wanted to break it down in a simple way, no confusion, no technical overload, as they say in the old Police TV dramas "just the facts Mam"

So you can pick the right uke for YOU 🎸

🌿 1. Soprano Ukulele (The Classic Small One)

This is the smallest and most traditional ukulele size.

🎵 Sound: Bright, cheerful, “island-style” tone
Best for: Kids, small hands, or anyone who loves that classic ukulele sound
🎒 Feel: Lightweight and very portable

💡 If you want that “happy ukulele vibe” you hear in old Hawaiian music—this is it.

🌴 2. Concert Ukulele (The Balanced Choice)

This is the “middle ground” and one of the most popular choices.

🎵 Sound: Slightly deeper and fuller than soprano
Best for: Beginners and adults who want comfort + sound balance
🎒 Feel: More space on the fretboard, easier finger placement

💡 If you’re unsure what to get — honestly, this is the safest choice.

🌊 3. Tenor Ukulele (The Rich, Deeper Sound)

This is the bigger ukulele with more room and fuller tone.

🎵 Sound: Deep, warm, and rich
Best for: Players who want better tone control or more advanced playing
🎒 Feel: Larger body, easier for fingerpicking

💡 Many performers and experienced players love this size because of its fuller sound.

💛 My Honest Advice

Don’t overthink it too much when starting out.

Your first ukulele will not be your last ukulele, that is for sure.

The best ukulele is the one that makes you want to pick it up and play every day. 🎸✨

That’s what really matters.

👉 Ready to Start Your Ukulele Journey?

If you’re still unsure, I always recommend starting with a concert ukulele — it’s the easiest transition for most beginners.  A real Goldilocks ukulele, not too big not too small, just right.
