Finding Joy in Every Strum: Meet the Heart of Bribie Island’s Uke Group

The ukulele has a way of bringing people together — and it’s all thanks to passionate volunteers who show up, share their love of music, and turn weekly sessions into something special.

This week, we’re shining the spotlight on a wonderful community member from Bribie Island, Queensland, whose ukulele journey began with a little encouragement from family and blossomed into a fulfilling, musical life shared with others.

🎤 Tell us a bit about your ukulele group.
Our group got strumming in 2017 and we meet on Bribie Island, QLD. We’ve got around 50 members, and it’s always a warm, welcoming crowd. There’s a lot of laughter, a lot of learning, and plenty of music to go around.

🎤 What first drew you to the ukulele?
My daughter — she’s a music teacher — encouraged me to buy a uke. I went with a soprano Kala and fell in love right away. It was simple, joyful, and gave me a new way to connect with music and people.

🎤 What has volunteering meant for you?
So much. There’s something deeply fulfilling about meeting new people, helping them find their way with the ukulele, and watching their confidence grow. It’s not just about playing notes — it’s about building friendships and feeling connected. That’s the real reward.

🎤 Why do you think the ukulele community in Australia is so special?
It’s inclusive and joyful. The ukulele makes music accessible, no matter your age or background. We’re all in it together — learning, laughing, and singing side by side. That’s a beautiful thing.

🎤 What advice would you give someone who’s thinking of joining or volunteering?
Just jump in. Whether you’re picking up your first uke or helping behind the scenes, it’s a wonderfully rewarding experience. You’ll make new friends, share a lot of smiles, and maybe even surprise yourself with what you can do.

🎤 How can people find or join your group?
We’re part of the U3A (University of the Third Age) network. There are branches all over Australia — a quick Google search will point you in the right direction. Facebook is also great for finding local uke groups near you.

🎤 What song always gets your group smiling?
Right now, it’s Harvest Moon by Neil Young. It’s a bit of a challenge, but we love it. There’s something magical about how it brings the whole group together — everyone leans in, and by the end, we’re all smiling.
