The ukulele world thrives because of amazing volunteers who lead groups, organise jams, and build communities with every strum.
This week, we’re featuring Andy from Kats 'n' Jammers, based in South Australia. Let’s hear what he had to say:

🎤 Tell us a bit about your ukulele group.
Kats 'n' Jammers started in 2018, originally led by Sharon Moss. I took over in 2021.
We meet at Seaton Park RSL and average between 70 and 80 players each jam!
🎤 What inspired you to play ukulele and join a group?
It started with the music, then the instrument, and finally the people. All three have kept me coming back.
🎤 How has volunteering shaped your connection to the community?
It’s helped me become more involved with the RSL community. I’m now on the committee and help out with their events — both personally and through the uke group.
🎤 What makes the ukulele community in Australia so special?
The friendliness. Every group I’ve come across is welcoming, and there's a strong willingness to share — music, ideas, laughs — between individuals and groups.

🎤 What advice would you give someone thinking of joining or volunteering in a uke group?
Go explore!
Visit different groups — they each have their own style and vibe. Find where you feel most comfortable.
And if you can, play with multiple groups — it’s a great way to grow and connect.
🎤 How can people find or join Kats 'n' Jammers?
Come along to one of our jams — we meet every second Saturday.

🎤 What’s a song that always gets your group smiling and singing?
Tough to choose, but some favourites are:
🎵 Spirit in the Sky
🎵 Indian Lake
🎵 Wagon Wheel
...and many more!
🎤 What makes the ukulele community in Australia so special?
The welcoming atmosphere. No matter where you travel across Australia, you’ll find a uke group that greets you like an old friend. Most groups use The Ukulele Club Songbooks, which makes it easy for newcomers to jump in and strum along.
